Christian Practices Guide

Discover a Simple Spiritual Rhythm for Your Life with God

Christian practices help us create space for prayer, Scripture, attentiveness, and faithful living. This guide will introduce four foundational practices and help you choose a helpful place to begin.

Begin the Guide

Before You Begin

The practice is not the destination.

Christian practices are intentional rhythms that help us become more attentive and responsive to God. They do not earn God’s love, secure His approval, or make us more valuable than other believers.

The goal is not to master a religious technique. The goal is to grow in a steady and authentic relationship with Jesus.

Prayer matters because it helps us commune with God. Scripture matters because God uses His Word to reveal truth and form our lives. Attentiveness matters because God is already present and at work, including within the ordinary moments of our days.

You do not need to begin every practice at once. Begin with one simple rhythm, practice it faithfully, and allow God to meet you within it.

Pause

Become Attentive

Begin by noticing where you are.

Before thinking about which practice you should begin, take a moment to notice your present experience with God.

Perhaps you believe in God but struggle to remain aware of Him during an ordinary day. You may desire a more consistent rhythm of prayer. You may read Scripture regularly but long to engage it more deeply. Or you may understand what Scripture says while struggling to carry it into your decisions and relationships.

Pause and consider:

  • When do I most naturally turn my attention toward God?
  • What regularly distracts me from His presence?
  • How consistent is my present rhythm of prayer?
  • How do I normally approach Scripture?
  • Where is God inviting me to respond more faithfully?

Learn

Why Christian Practices Matter

Spiritual formation often takes place through small and faithful rhythms repeated over time.

01

Practices Help Us Pause

They interrupt distraction and create space to return our attention to God.

02

Practices Help Us Listen

They slow us down so that Scripture and prayer become more than information or routine.

03

Practices Help Us Respond

They invite us to carry what we receive into our choices, relationships, and actions.

04

Practices Help Us Return

When our attention wanders, a faithful rhythm gives us a simple way to begin again.

Four Foundational Practices

Four Doorways into a Deeper Life with God

Each practice has a different emphasis, but all four are intended to help you know, love, and follow Jesus more faithfully.

F

Practice One

Practice the Presence

Learning to walk with God throughout the day

FLOW helps you practice the presence of God within ordinary life. It provides a simple rhythm for redirecting your attention toward God wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

Focus your attention on God

Listen for His invitation

Observe what is happening within and around you

Worship through faithful response

FLOW may be helpful when:

  • You struggle to notice God during the day
  • Your spiritual life feels separated from ordinary life
  • You want a simple practice that can be used anywhere
  • You desire greater awareness of God’s presence

Primary invitation: Become attentive.

D

Practice Two

The Daily Office

Creating regular moments to return to God

The Daily Office establishes intentional moments of prayer and Scripture throughout the day. Instead of allowing responsibilities, demands, and distractions to determine the entire rhythm of life, we pause and return our attention to God.

Morning: Begin the day with God

Noonday: Return to God in the middle of activity

Evening: Reflect with gratitude

Night: Release the day into God’s care

The Daily Office may be helpful when:

  • Your prayer life is inconsistent or easily forgotten
  • You need structure that helps you return to God
  • Your days feel hurried, scattered, or overloaded
  • You desire a sustainable rhythm of prayer and Scripture

Primary invitation: Establish a rhythm.

L

Practice Three

Lectio Divina

Receiving Scripture with prayerful attentiveness

Lectio Divina invites you to slow down and listen deeply to Scripture. Rather than approaching a passage only to gather information, you become attentive to what God may be bringing to your attention through His Word.

Read: Receive the passage slowly

Reflect: Notice what draws your attention

Respond: Speak honestly with God

Rest: Remain quietly in His presence

Lectio Divina may be helpful when:

  • Your Bible reading feels hurried or primarily informational
  • You want to listen more carefully through Scripture
  • You need help slowing down and becoming reflective
  • You desire to bring prayer and Scripture together

Primary invitation: Listen deeply.

W

Practice Four

The Living Word

Carrying Scripture into everyday life

The Living Word helps you carry a passage of Scripture with you throughout the day. The goal is not only to remember the words, but to allow God’s Word to shape your attention, desires, conversations, decisions, and actions.

Receive: Choose a passage or central truth

Remember: Return to it during the day

Reflect: Notice where it meets ordinary life

Respond: Put the Word into faithful action

The Living Word may be helpful when:

  • You understand Scripture but struggle to apply it
  • You forget what you have read soon after reading it
  • You want God’s Word to shape daily decisions
  • You sense a need for practical obedience and response

Primary invitation: Live what you receive.

Grace, Not Performance

Practices are a means of attention, not spiritual achievement.

A spiritual practice can become unhealthy when it is used to prove our faithfulness, compare ourselves with others, or attempt to earn something from God.

There will be days when your attention wanders, your schedule changes, or your practice feels difficult. That does not mean you have failed. The invitation is simply to return.

Faithful spiritual formation is usually quieter and slower than we expect. Small rhythms practiced with humility can gradually shape the way we pray, think, respond, and live.

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.”

John 15:4

Begin Wisely

Choose a Rhythm You Can Practice Faithfully

01

Begin Small

A practice does not need to be long or complicated to become meaningful. Begin with a rhythm you can sustain.

02

Practice Consistently

A few faithful minutes repeated regularly may be more formative than an ambitious plan that quickly becomes overwhelming.

03

Receive Grace

Do not turn the practice into another burden. Allow it to become a place where you receive and respond to God’s grace.

04

Return When Interrupted

Missing a day is not the end of the rhythm. Simply return and begin again without shame.

Reflect

Personal Reflection

What kind of rhythm may help you right now?

01

Do I most need help noticing God, establishing prayer, or living Scripture faithfully?

02

What part of my present life with God feels least supported by a regular rhythm?

03

Which of the four practices feels like an invitation rather than another obligation?

04

What small amount of time could I realistically offer to this practice?

Pray

A Prayer Before Choosing

Invite God into your next step.

Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me into a life with You.

Help me move beyond simply knowing about You into a steady rhythm of walking with You. Give me wisdom to recognize a helpful place to begin and humility to start simply.

Keep me from turning a spiritual practice into performance. Teach me to receive Your grace, listen to Your Word, become attentive to Your presence, and respond faithfully in everyday life.

Lead me by Your Spirit and form the life of Christ within me. Amen.

Final Encouragement

Choose one practice. Begin simply.

You do not need to become an expert in spiritual practices. You simply need a rhythm that helps you become more attentive to God and more responsive to His grace.

Choose one practice. Begin simply. Let the rhythm support your relationship with Jesus rather than compete with it.
