Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people. These gifts are not rewards for spiritual maturity, signs of personal importance, or titles that place one believer above another.
Spiritual gifts are expressions of God’s grace. They equip believers to strengthen the Church, serve others, share the love of Christ, and participate in God’s work in the world.
Encourager GIFT is designed to help you notice patterns that may point toward the ways God has equipped you to serve. The goal is not simply to identify a gift. The goal is to become more faithful with whatever God has entrusted to you.
Pause Before Discovery
Slow Down Before You Search for a Ministry Role
It can be tempting to approach a spiritual gifts assessment hoping it will immediately tell you where you belong, what ministry you should join, or what role you should pursue.
Christian formation invites us to begin somewhere deeper. Before asking what you should do, take time to remember who you are becoming and whom you are following.
Ask God to help you recognize the ways He has already been working through your life. Remain open to both confirmation and surprise. Sometimes the gifts that bless others most are the ones that feel so natural that we barely notice them.

Understanding Spiritual Gifts
Different Expressions of Grace—One Body of Christ
The New Testament describes a variety of gifts. Some are highly visible, while others are expressed quietly through everyday acts of faithfulness. These broad areas can help you understand how gifts may function within Christian community.
Leading and Guiding
Helping people move toward a shared purpose with wisdom, courage, and responsibility.
These gifts may be expressed through leadership, administration, vision, organization, discernment, or guiding people through change.
Teaching and Communicating
Helping others understand truth, Scripture, faith, and faithful Christian living.
These gifts may be expressed through teaching, wisdom, knowledge, exhortation, preaching, communication, or helping people apply biblical truth.
Caring and Encouraging
Strengthening people through compassion, presence, support, mercy, and encouragement.
These gifts may be expressed through pastoral care, hospitality, encouragement, mercy, intercession, listening, or walking with people through difficulty.
Serving and Supporting
Meeting practical needs and creating the conditions in which ministry and community can flourish.
These gifts may be expressed through service, helps, generosity, craftsmanship, hospitality, organization, or faithful support behind the scenes.

- Recognize possible areas of spiritual gifting.

GIFT Cannot
- Define your identity or determine your value.
- Measure your spiritual maturity.
- Guarantee a particular ministry position.
- Replace prayer, Scripture, community, or pastoral wisdom.
- Limit what God may invite you to do in a particular season.
Your Deepest Identity
Your Gift Describes How You May Serve. It Does Not Define Who You Are.
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
1 Peter 4:10
Your deepest identity is not found in your gift, your ministry role, your usefulness, or the recognition you receive from others. Your identity is found in Christ.
You belong to Jesus before you ever serve Jesus. You are loved before you accomplish anything. Spiritual gifts are not proof that you are more valuable than someone else. They are expressions of grace that God entrusts to you for the blessing of others.
Healthy ministry begins when service flows from belonging rather than from the need to prove ourselves. Your gift is not a title to protect. It is a trust to steward with humility, love, and faithfulness.
Preparing for Discovery
Prepare Your Heart for the Assessment
The goal is not to produce the most impressive profile. The goal is to answer honestly so that your results can become a helpful starting point for prayer, reflection, conversation, and service.
Answer Honestly
Choose the response that best reflects your actual experience, not the answer that sounds most spiritual or admirable.
Think About Real Experiences
Consider the ways you normally respond when needs arise, people ask for help, or opportunities to serve become available.
Notice What Energizes You
Pay attention to the forms of service that bring a sense of joy, meaning, compassion, responsibility, or spiritual energy.
Avoid Title-Based Answers
Do not answer only according to your current church position, ministry title, profession, or expected responsibilities.
Remain Open
Your results may confirm what you already know or bring attention to gifts and patterns you have previously overlooked.
Pray for Wisdom
Ask God to help you recognize His grace, receive your results with humility, and respond with faithful action.

Four Healthy Ways to Respond to What You Discover
Notice What Rings True
Identify the descriptions that reflect the ways you have already served, contributed, cared, led, taught, encouraged, or supported others.
Look for Patterns
Consider where you have experienced joy, effectiveness, confirmation, spiritual fruit, or repeated opportunities to serve.
Invite Trusted Perspective
Ask a pastor, mentor, ministry leader, spouse, or trusted friend where they have seen God consistently work through your life.
Choose One Faithful Step
Look for one practical opportunity to serve, experiment, learn, or grow rather than waiting for complete certainty.

Consider These Questions Before You Begin
When have you felt most alive, useful, or spiritually energized while serving other people?
What needs, problems, people, or ministry opportunities do you naturally notice?
In what areas have other believers consistently affirmed or encouraged you?
What is one area of service you may be willing to explore more intentionally?

Before continuing, pause for a few seconds. Ask God to give you a grateful heart, a teachable spirit, and the wisdom to recognize the ways His grace may be at work through your life.
Lord, thank You for inviting me to participate in Your work. Thank You for every gift You give to Your Church. Help me answer these questions honestly and receive my results with humility. Show me how You have already been working through my life and where You may be inviting me to serve. Keep me from comparison, pride, or fear. Teach me to use whatever You have entrusted to me for Your glory and for the good of others. Amen.
